I have an 18hp 2 cylinder installed on my sailboat. A few weeks ago I went out and there were no problems.
Now when I try to start, the motor spins very slowly (as if the batteries were flat) and it backfires.
The batteries are fine (had them tested). The fuel tank is full (filled up on last outing).
Now, I'm at a loss.

If you can help, please email me asap. I don't want to appear the complete idiot when i talk to the engineer!!!

Thank you,

Lance

Perhaps it might be a good idea to have the timing checked. A timing gear may have slipped and changed the engines fuel injection timing. This would account for the backfiring. might be worth having checked.
Post your results when u have the engine repaired. I am curious too see if this would cause the symptoms you have indicated and i would appreciate it if others would comment on what i have told u to have checked too let me know if it sounds right. hope this is of some help.

Yes,you are correct. Many fuel systems contain a keyed fuel pump drive. Some are on a tapered shaft, and some are on a straight shaft. Some of these keys are fairly soft in make up so as to shear if the internals of the fuel pump fails. This can be very frustrating at times but,it is built in so you don't destroy other components. Sometimes the key fails just because of it's age.Replace it and you are going again.NOTE: do not ,if you have a soft key, replace it with a harder key.As mentioned before,it has a purpose, don't defeat it. Hope this helps.
