just wanted to share info with everyone
after replacing timing belt, following all procedures, (a couple of times)
we still had no power and lots of black smoke
if you increase throttle gradually the motor would rev up other wise it would not, (fuel/air issue right????)
sort of
checked turbo, it appeared to be fine,
finally we removed the valve cover and what did we find but 8 bent and i mean really bent push rods
replaced and adjusted valves 12 and 20 thousands and all is well

apparently while the belt did not break and appeared to be only slightly larger than the new belt the engine jumped time and thus the damage occured.

this all occured on the coldest day of the year -15 or so at start-up
any one with info on why , extra thick oil????
i would like your input

hope this may help someone else

david

If the belt was loose it is possible it jumped time when it was shut down. Most Diesels will jerk backwards when shutdown as they no longer have enough momentum to complete the compression stroke thus the compression in a cylinder will force the piston back down. With everything turning forward and the crankshaft jerking back it is able to slip the belt since it is now pulling on the slack side of the belt.
