I have a 2000 7.3 powerstroke F250 diesel, 150k miles. Just recently, fuel appears to be leaking during a cold start. Its coming from the engine compartment area above the front trans axle. Thats about all I can determine. A mechanic said to check the fuel filter which I have and it does not appear to be coming from this area. Any suggestions? Thanks

There are 2 small steel lines that feed fuel from the filter housing to each cylinder head. The fittings could be leaking from deteroirated "o" rings in the jam nut on the lines to the filter housing. However, when fuel leaks from the filter housing either at the filter top or at the lines the fuel travels back down the valley and leaks down the trans bell housing, onto the starter and oil filter. When the filter housing water drain leaks from the internal "o" ring it leaks down the right front of the engine. When the fuel supply and return lines leak they tend to leak down the left front of the engine. Hope that I was some help.

Hi,
My 1999 7.3 leaks fuel from a tube on the right front of engine. You suggested an O ring from the water drain from the fuel filter is this very hard to replace
and do you remove the fuel filter to find or replace O ring.

Friend of mine had this problem. I don't know if he had to remove the fileter assembly. I don't think so. The 'o' rings are made of a 'viton' type material and he had to go to a hydralic place to get them. Ford wanted a complete rebuild kit and that cost $$$. Get it fixed as he did not get around to replacing the seals with the correct one. He drove it with a small leak for 1 year and it esculated into a major repair.
