They only did them for I think 2 years then went to the new compact gear train design. The engine had a longer stroke and did not have the EGR system It was just a 14L version of the 12.7 block but with the 14 L cylinders but it had the earlier style valve train and not the compact valve trane they use now. It came in 515 and 575 HP. One of those at 575 with a Pitts burg Power Box is a bad ass setup.I was told they were only available in Freightliner classics as an option but you have one in a volvo. What Hp is on the decal on the valve cover and what transmission does it have? Some of teh dealers around here have no clue about them until you show them the specs.Id love to have one of those in my old Pete.

Another thing about it is the rod journal is larger than a 12.7 They came out when i was still working and to pull a piston you pull the liner and piston together cause the lower rod end will not come back up thru the liner.I was told in school only freightliner had them because it was after the buyout of DD. But i guess they were wrong if one is in a Volvo. They were a built till last of 03 or early 04 before and was a DDEC 4. If i was wishing thats what i would be behind.I dont remenber when the compact gear case came out but sure did not like working on it.

This is an old thread but I thought I'd still share a what I know about them. The 14Ls first started appearing in trucks in 2000 but weren't officially released until 2001. They had a longer bore (133mm) and stroke (168mm) than the 12.7 and made approximately 18.55hp/lb of boost (according to Bruce at PP). They were available at 500hp, 550hp and, exclusive to Freightliner, 575hp all with 1850# torque. The reason they weren't more popular is because Detroit decided that because it wasn't really a new engine, mostly just a higher horsepower, there was no reason to do a huge press release on it. Kinda hard to spec out a truck with an engine you don't even know exists if you ask me. There were only a few thousand built and sold in north America, however, they are still available from Detroit as a factory remanufactured engine if you want one in a glider...trust me, you do. I think that these engines not selling well lead Detroit to believe that the higher horsepower wasn't in high demand and that's why they were capped at 515hp when the EGR engines came out...but I'm just guessing at that.
