I have a westerbeke diesel (aka BMC) on my sailboat, and I've pulled the head to replace a leaking head gasket. The hour meter was disconnected some time in the past and so I have no idea how many hours are on this 27-year-old engine. However, now that the head is off, once you scrape off the carbon there is absolutely no cylinder ridge at the top of the bore. I've worked on a lot of gas engines and after so many miles you always get the bore ridge as the cylinder wears away. Are diesels any different? Does a smooht bore indicate low hours or a rebuild sometime in the past?

first the answer for the question : The smooth bore indicates either the liners were replaced in past or ran less hours.This is true.But diesel fuel also has properties to form the scale on liners.More over the wear is mostly due to the abrasive action of fine dust in air intake system.As this should be understood well,that whether the fuel is diesel or petol, this abrasive action normally takes place after some hours of operation due to the airfiltering system.This cannot be avoided but can be reduced.As a thump rule, the wear rate in diesel engine liners are 0.001inches / every 1000 hour of operation. This period can be increased by effective filtering systems,fuel addititives,etc or with the latest graphite coated liners.Interesting?
