I am working on a small 8kw generator with a kubota diesel...engine cranks slow cold or hot ...battery is new 8d starter is new..all connections are good......engine has 12000 hrs on it...it will start and run fine if you hit it with a little ether..once its going its ok..but will not restart on its own..cranks to slow...any ideas???? timing???? thanx

Sounds like you have a fuel quality issue. Might mean your diesel fuel has a low cetane number. The higher the cetane, the faster the starting, smoother the idling, and the more horsepower.

Ether ignites quick and hot, which helps in the diesel ignition process. I'd probably recommend using a good diesel additive in your fuel and fix the problem at the source. In the long run, ether can dry out your fuel and reduce the lubricity properties in it. That will cause engine wear and damage. Cetane corrects without damage.

I know many people think of additives as hokum and snake oil, but they've either tried the wrong product or did not make a wise selection. There are a lot out there, some work better than others and off the shelf isn't always the best choice.
