Hello Forum! Our first post here, and it is a tough problem!

We recently purchased a "rebuilt" Kubota EB300 diesel generator. It ran great for a while, but has been developing a "rattle".

When it happens, it quickly looses power, and rpm drops right down. It has been happening much more often lately. The noise sounds a lot like a hydraulic lifter rattle on a car, but of course this engine does not have those!

The engine is in Thailand, and the seller is in Australia ignoring my emails

Some things we checked:
Oil pressure great
Coolant temp normal
Load is within normal range
Very little or no smoke
Injector cleaned and reinstalled
fuel filter clean
The oil looked ok when changed, no metal particles

Any possible cause? We dread it may be something internal about to really go bad!

Thanks
Jerry

Hey...I know you posted this in 2012, are you still having problems?

I'm in the petroleum industry and your problem 'sounds' (pun intended) like a fuel quality issue. Every country in the world has similar, but different finished fuel characteristics. The differences stem primarily from the source of crude oil being refined as well as the refining process itself.

A rattle sound and loss of power leads me to suspect the fuel has a low cetane number. Cetane is what gives fuel horsepower, faster/easier ignition, smoother idling, and better fuel economy. The expectations for minimum cetane differs depending upon where you are. In the U.S. and Canada the minimum is 40. I believe the EU sets the bar at 51.

If you haven't chucked the generator already, I'd recommend using a proven cetane improver to each fuel delivery.

The only question really important is "What's for lunch?"
