I have been having a huge problem with oil pressure in my Perkins Diesel 4108 ever since I changed the oil for the first time. The engine was rebuilt in 1980 and sat dormant with fresh oil in it for 25 years. I started using it and it worked perfectly for several years. However, it is in a sailboat so it gets very little use (in and out of the slip mostly). I decided it would be a good idea to put in a fresh oil filter and fresh oil. After starting the engine after the fresh oil and filter, the engine gauge registered 0 oil pressure. Knowing you cannot run an engine without oil pressure, I immediately shut it down. I then self primed the oil pump through the side of the block and tried starting the engine again. After several attempts, I finally got oil pressure. Ever since that time, when starting the engine, I never know if it will have oil pressure or not – sometimes yes and sometimes no. I use a mechanical gauge with a clear plastic hose so there is no doubt about whether or not there is true oil pressure. If there is no oil in the tube, there is no oil pressure. I have had multiple diesel mechanics out scratching their heads. If anyone has any ideas, please help!!!!

What kind or brand of oil filter did you use? That's where to start.
