I'm replacing the head gaskets on my 1986 6.2.

Are the head bolts reusable or are they the torque to yield type? My GM parts guy could not find any warning regarding the head bolts, so he feels that they can be reused.

Do the cylinder heads have seat inserts installed on the exhaust side from the factory?

What is a good replacement head gasket brand?

Are the factory valves anything special and can they be refaced, like any other valve?

Thanks for any help.

Hi,
just a bit of info for you a bit long but may help..
When replacing head gaskets, you should read the FEL-PRO articles ..
82-83 6.2's came from the factory with standard type head bolts that were torqued in 2 stages , first to 88 ft/lbs then to 103 ft/lbs. reusable.
84 and later use TTY head bolts these should not be reused.. torque to 20 ft/lbs - 50 ft/lbs - 90 degree turn.
Gm or Fel-Pro head gaskets are designed not to need re-torquing.
Gm recommend using new TTY bolts GM14077193 or FEL-PRO ES72724..
make sure bolt thread in block is clean run a M12-1.75 tap down them - clean with oil free solvent - apply thread sealer to thread and under head of bolt ..
note.. water pump bolts with 15mm head also require a thread sealant..

Hi,
sorry missed a bit..
Warning !!!! use extreme care when removing the Head bolts, must be removed in correct order..
loosen the bolts in 1/4 turn increments until removable by hand working the the reverse order of torquing up head.
valves are rebuildable.
suggest you get a manual they are available from Haynes the number is 12V4-1736 i think bird attacked my front page

I got new head bolts from FelPro, they have a sealer on the threads and under the bolt head. Do I need to use additional sealer too or just install them as they are?

Hi,
didnt the bolts have any info with them??
are you sure its a sealant??
if it is a seallant you shouldnt need to apply anything else, but check with the supplier for exact details..

For the record I have reused dozens of GM headbolts from 6.2's and I have replaced some. I have never used any sealer of any kind on the headbolts and have never had any problems with them leaking. Just FYI.

My manual says, reuse is not recommended because there is a new updated style of bolt out that has more threads and wont stretch and break, the old ones will. sealant IS required on 6.2L and 6.5L headbolts, however, if it came preapplied, more is not necessary. only if it was not applied. -Frank
