Just had my bull gear replaced about 10k miles ago and noticed very thin, small wire like shavings on the drain plug magnet while changing the oil. Is this normal when a new gear is installed ? Break in period ? The old gear was still in good shaped and was changed because it had 1.2 million miles on it. Engine itself has 400k on rebuild and never had any serious issues. Need an experts opinion. thanks for looking

Well, the couple times I've had metal on my 12.7 drain plug indicated a problem. Like small bits from a couple piston pin bearings breaking up and and metal from a bull gear bearing that was failing. I realize this is probably not very helpful, kind of like the LifeLock monitor commercial. Anyway, this forum seems to be on it's deathbed, thought I'd throw my experience out there.

Run it and see what you have next oil change.
I like this forum I have just been busy as a one legged man in a ass kickin contest and don't have time to internet.

I had metal stuck to my magnetic drain plug once and it turned out to be pieces of the bull gear bearing, not gear pieces. (my only experience with this)

It is never "normal" to have any metal on the plug, but it can run a long time while it is deteriorating.

Also, it can be helpful to cut open the oil filters and examine.

'Thanks, I appreciate your site very much. I just sold another engine here this week. I am glad to know there are people working to improve the site whenever possible. I am very happy to be of some service in that regard.'

Aaron Lewin, Thorp, USA

'I had hundreds of "hits" on your website which generated 5 or 6 inquiries from all over the world; Germany, The Philippines, Korea, Sweden, and Spain. I sold all 3 of my engines to a buyer from South Korea. Your website was invaluable to me in selling these engines; no other ads that I ran produced any inquiries.'
