Our volunteer fire department has a 1992 Pierce Dash pumper with a 6V92TA, 350HP engine and a HD755DR transmission. We started having a surging issue while under loaded throttle up. engine fires right up every time with no problems. When we get above 35 mph the engine loses power and starts surging. This truck only has 4000 miles and close to 200 hours on it. We started by checking the obvious fuel and air filters. changed all. Then we thought with age maybe the fuel lines were collapsing under load. Changed supply and return hoses from tank to front. Changed the line from filter to pump. this helped a little but problem still there. pulled all fittings again cleaned inspected and resealed. Changed the primary fuel filter base and installed new filter again thinking we had a filter base crack. We pulled the line off of tank and used a scope to check for cracks in the tank pickup tube. It was clear and no cracks visible. We then put a fuel pressure gauge on it. Pressures were a little low. Installed new pump and orifice. fuel pressures are now running about 40 psi at idle and 66 - 70 psi at no load. The problem is getting worse. We checked the cam shaft sensor for clearance and function and it is fine. Checked to make sure inlet boost sensor is not leaking air around hose going to it. problem still there. Under hard acceleration the engine almost acts like it cuts to part power then to full power then back. The turbo is spooling up smoothly.
We are a small volunteer fire department with limited income. Any help in trying to fix the problem would be appreciated.
