Hello Forum!! I am new to this site and hope to learn more about my 1958 GM 4104 Detrioit 6-71 engine!! The engine starts and runs strong , but every so often it shuts down while crusing down the road!! I was thinking it was mold or the like clogging the filters, because every time this happened , I would pull over, remove both filters and reprime the new ones and be on my way till it would do it again, in ten miles or 100 miles!!So I desided to remove all fuel, via a transfer pump and two filters in line(one was a fine screen in a clear housing), and never saw any mold or anything!! so now I need help because the last few times it shut don on me I noticed that the primary filter was always full of fuel at shut down and the secondary filter was half full, and i guess lost prime , and shut me down! I am thinking i am sucking air in the line some where after the primary filter!! any thoughts PLEASE!! Bob

Morning. Thanks for the responce. I have completed a vacuum test on fuel lines from the primary to the inlet side of fuel pump. It held a strong vacuum for as long as i kept it hooked up. Would that tell me i cant be sucking air? I even hooked up from fuel tank all the way thru both fuel filtees and fuel pump. (All dry, no fuel ) and held a vacuum there as well !! I am wondering if maybe the old flexable fuel lines could be collapsing!! Or maybe fuel pump is weak? I did a return fuel test , got half a gallon in 60 sec. at idle. Any thoughts ?? Thanks Bob

Fuel pressure at secondary filter is 10psi at idle and 65 to 70 psi at 1800 rpm , yes one of you hoses could have a flap in it ,usually at either end where the tail fitting screws in also check your flange fittings for damage to the seating area regards david

Thanks for the responce detroit ! I am replacing
The suction side and pressure side flexable hoses
And the filter sealing area i belive are good. Was
wondering if the check vavle in line before the primary
filter could be not holding pressure and letting fuel
go back to tank whle running down the road???
Thanks again the help!!!
