I have a tandem dump 1991 top kick 3116 cat ser#2bk 250hp bad engine.i have did a little research and have looked at a lot of engines on net. So I have found a few but it seems like its 8500$ new or 2500$ junk.so my question is is there anyway to measure or check blowby?
I've found a 3116 that's lower hp I believe 170hp there is no tag on engine.its in a 1990 top kick with 190,000 miles now,the engine runs very smooth and for an automatic it seemed to have decent power but it had not real bad but moderate blowby out tube also oil fill but no smoke exc oil pressure ,do the 3116 seem to have a lot of blowby at the high mileage ?engine seems to overall run well beside blowby. Also would it be worth changing my turbo, injectors.and adjust fuel settings to get a little closer hp to what I had ? In a pinch so any help will be greatly appreciated!

Gee not too many answers here hey ! Old posts I'm answering just because I'm here and its hot outside. To test blowby you test the cylinder compression . Now I don't know how that is done in a diesel so I can't help with that one .

That size motor is heavy but you could get the old one reconditioned . I would just put a set of new standard rings in it or get some 5 thou oversize if available or even 10 thou oversize and file the ends to give the required clearance in the bore . That works well with old Landrovers in petrol and diesel flavours.

A modern motor mechanic probably won't want to do that for you and will try to do a complete ,expensive overhaul with new liners new pistons etc etc . In my experience though the above ring change usually does the job pretty well. You hire a ridge remover and a hone to improve on this if you want.

You can use an inches of water gauge, take dip stick out and put a hose on the tube, put hose clamp on it to make it tight. have the pressure gauge on the other end. read the reading at high idle , low idle and full load. readings should .not be over three psi. 0 to 1.5 new engine. get to 4 and above start having seal damage on crankshaft and valves stems.
