Diesel Talk
I have a Thomas 245 skid steer with a Deutz turbocharged 4 cyl oil cooled (80 hp?) engine.
The engine starts and runs great when cold and continues to do so for 15 to 20 minutes.
The first indication of trouble is a slight change in the engine's sound, sort of like a miss in a gas engine.
Shortly thereafter it starts losing power and laboring, dropping RPM and running very poorly, many times
to the point of stalling. If I stop loading or moving the skid steer when it starts laboring sometimes the
engine will recover RPM but there is a definite miss from that point on and if I put any load on the engine
it will not pull and loses RPM again. Shutting down and letting the engine cool for a half-hour to 45 minutes, it
will start and run normally for a period of time, maybe ten minutes or so, and then starts acting up again.
There is obviously a heat issue, however I do not get any coolant overheating indication.
I suspect a turbocharger problem but I'm certainly not a diesel mechanic.
Anyone have any ideas of what might be wrong?
Thanks....
