I have a 1995 chevy 3500 with a 6.5 diesel turbo. I only had one prob out of this thing 1 1/2 years ago it started smoking real bad. The reason turbo went bad and was sucking ouil out of the motor just thought I'd share that anyway after they installed the turbo the truck had a dead miss just every now and then so I didn't pay that much attention to it. Just recently the truck just shut down on me so I had it towed home. Every couple of days I'd try to start it but no then one day I just kept cranking and haha it started but shutdown after about 10 seconds then would start back after cranking and holding down the pedal a little. It was hard to start but, would run but wouldn't rev up, but I managed to get it to the dealer for testing and managed 40 mph a couple of times. They said the machine showed no codes so after a couple of days they called and said it was the injection pump, but I know their prices so I drove it home. I went online and was told to try the pmd first, I did, but honestly it made it worse. So I ordered the pump and took it to a diesel mechanic (half price what the dealer wanted to put it in) anyway he called me to come take a look at what he found just tearing it down. The turbo that the dealer had installed had water in it and the fan was wore out and sticking to the sides not turning so we went with the turbo first. Well the truck did run better, but going up the road would sputter, miss, but would straighten up until the pedal was pushed farther anyway we decided the pump must be bad also. So he changed that yippee no more missing and sputtering BUT now it has to crank alot before it starts and doesn't have the power it should. So we brought in another diesel man with a computer test, but he said his was for 1996 trucks and up and that my truck was running in limp mode (?), but he did get a code about spark timing on cam or something, again (I don't know) He also said the computer probably needed to be reprogrammed. So if anyone has the answer I sure would appreciate it NO BULL, PLEASE? One more thing everyone keeps saying that 6.5 are 350 oldsmobile engines. I had a diesel man tell me that the engines were 396 chevy thats why they are so powerful (I don't know) Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure about the codes that you are being told about, usually when a diesel sputters it is not getting fuel or it is not being atomized well by the injectors. As for the the Oldsmobile info that was the 5.7L diesel the 6.2 and 6.5 were designed and built by the Detroit Diesel division of GM and they were not based on any of the gasoline engines.
As for running on limp mode, if you are then the power would be reduced by the engine controller so that you don't destroy other parts of the engine getting it to where you could have work done on it.

thanks but it doesn't sputter or miss now it just doesn't want to start unless you crank it alot and after its started it has power but like only half what it should have. I have read alot of threads in forums a few of those said the computer needs reprogramming. I didn't post threads there just was hoping for more insight thanks

You said that you had a diesel guy replace the injection pump, I would assume that he lined up the timing marks properly, but on the 1994 and newer 6.5L engines them the PCM(Powertrain Control Module) runs the actual timing. This needs to be timed to the pump which a mechanic that usually works on these should have the correct scan tool to time the PCM and the pump.
