I'd like to do a s-10 2.8 or 4.3 gas to 4.3 diesel conversion, but I CAN'T FIND ONE!! (O.K., being in Alaska COULD have something to do with it).

I know Frank-chevytrk13 doesn't see the economics (there ain't none) or point (artisitc expression/ bragging rights), but I just WANT one!

Any help in locating a good candidate engine or on conversion issues would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Can't help you with finding one, I have 7 but don't want to part with any right now.

Can give you some info on doing the S10 Blazer swap. The 4.3 diesel was made in RWD and FWD versions. The RWD is the BOP bellhousing pattern and the FWD is the same as the 2.8 Chevy.

The flexplate diameter is different between both engines as is the crankshaft at the rear boltup.

I know someone who recently did this swap into an S10. He used a fwd block with the rwd intake and the rwd serpentine drive belt system for the pulleys. He modified the exhaust manifolds to fit the Blazer. He made up engine mounts by using the fwd engine cradle with tabs to fit the Blazer. One big challenge was relocating the starter. It is on the drivers side and interfers with the front differential. What he did was make a bracket out of steel plate and moved it to the other side of the block. Then he found a Toyota tacoma starter that bolts up flush to the plate and seems to work out fine so far.

He also had to cut and weld the oil pan and make up an air cleaner box to fit.

He reports much better mileage then the 2.8 and better power.

He has more 4.3 diesels then I do and has more swaps planned for other vehicles, Think a Willys and Cherokee are on the list.

Good luck in your search for one. You should be able to get one in Alaska as I even know someone in South Africa doing a swap into a Toyota with the 4.3 diesel. Getting harder to find as many are being grabbed now before they are gone.

Where does your friend live? I am curious about swapping a 4.3 diesel into either a S10 or Toyota myself.... I don't know where to get one either.

The guy that did the Blazer 4.3 diesel is in Oregon. If you watch ebay you will see 4.3 engines and cars listed fairly often. A complete donor car is always a good idea if you have a choice.

The economics are getting real good on doing a diesel swap. Here in Michigan diesel is running .30 to .40 a gallon cheaper then gas. I drive about 20,000 miles a year back and forth to work and if I gain 5 to 8 miles per gallon the savings in fuel are between $700 and a $1000 per year.

Since I already have a factory new diesel engine that cost less then $100, the other conversion parts won't cost that much making the swap payoff in less then a year. Just need to find the time and vehicle for the conversion. One big problem making me wait now, facing emission inspections in a few years so don't know what will be allowed unless I use another early 80's GM car.

Its not so much the economics, I understand that, its the hassle. Too much work, if it didnt come with a diesel, dont put one one. If it came with a diesel, dont put a GAS engine in...............ick............Frank

I see your point about the hassle of conversions, but for some it is a hobby and the hassles are part of the fun. Not for everybody though.

V-6, You mentioned that you know someone in Oregon that has done the 4.3 diesel swap into a S-10. Could you tell me how to contact this person? Since this is a prodject that I have been wanting to do for a long time. I have one available and would like to know if there is a flywheel for the engine that I could use to put a standard S-10 5 speed behind it. The engine I have is from an Olds.So it is a cross engine. Rascal,
Have not been here for a while so did not see your posting, are you still looking for info?

The guy in Oregon made a flywheel from plate steel and had it balanced for his fwd 4.3. If you have the rwd 4.3 a flywheel from the V8 diesel can sometimes be found and it can be fitted.

If you need to get a hold of the guy in Oregon send me an email
