i have a 3406e model 2ws, 2000, i hear a pinging sound coming from around the exhaust manifold or turbo area. almost sound's like detonation in a gas engine... i think i do have another weak injector, i have replaced 2 since i bought it new in 2000, 770,000 miles.....would a weak injector make that sound... i don't know what else it could be.... ------------------------- ricky.......

If you have detirmined it not to be an exhaust leak, it could be an injector....or the turbo going bad. I have seen overfueling cause more of a knock than a ping...... I haven't seen this problem in the 3406E but have in others. I think it could be time to have the injectors gone through...at least with all those miles it is a good investment....If the turbo is going bad, it will start putting metal in your engine. Take off the intake side and check for loseness....

As joe said definitely check the hot wheel as one of your manifold diffuser rings could be failing ( if still fitted ) Regards David ------------------------- detroit

i did reseal the exhaust manifold and new studs last year....as a preventitive maintenance.....i didn't under stand why the metal sleeve that seems to reduce the size of the port was part of it....what is the reason for it ? .... ------------------------- ricky.......

i replaced the turbo with a cat reman at 500,000 just for piece of mind, was running great at the time, and run great after up untill now. a little down on power and a rough ness at idle. i pulled the piping back today just to have a look and all was fine. i think i just need some new injectors. probably will put injector cup o-ring's in at that time...... i need to buy or borrow the removal and install tool's to do the injector cup's.

i found the tool... it's 188.00 made by monaco.... never heard of them but the quality look's ok.....should i replace the whole injector cup and o-rings, or just the o-rings.....i've heard there is an updated cup..... are they worth replacing? ------------------------- ricky.......
