I have a 1990 GMC 3500 truck, with a 6.2L diesel and 4 speed auto, it is a "J" engine code. I don't have the heads for the truck, and was looking to get a new set, but instead have decided to replace the whole engine with a used one. Some people have told me that any year 6.2L GM diesel will fit, others tell me that becasue my truck has a computer, that the engine that i am replacing with must be computer controlled.

Does anyone know, will an older 6.2L diesel work in my truck, even if the engine is not a "J" code. Are there any modifications that need to be done.

Thanks

I don't have any answers to your questions, but if you are interested in buying older military 6.2L engines, there are a bunch of them up on the govliquidation auction block, which ends Thursday 7/24. They are located at Ft Polk, LA.

The computer controll they are refering to is the emissions only. A 1990 6.2 has a mechanically controlled injection pump. If you strip the engine down to the long block, a 6.2 is a 6.2. Your computer controlled emmisions will fit on your replacement. I would recomend you getting a replacement as close to 1990 as possible, to get the injector updates and use your old pump if possible. One engine to avoid is a red one. When Allison started making diesel engines for GM they were red. They have a problem with the heads that causes them to leak engine coolant between the head and the head gasket toward the back of the motor.
