I have a John Deere 2640 that I have owned for 2-3 years. I bought it used. It had the engine rebuiltsome time before I bought it.
We were loading a log onto a portable saw mill with the front end loader and I noticed the tractor started to bog down and start to blow blue smoke out the bypass vent.

We changed the fuel filter and air filter. We restarted the tractor after checking to see that the fuel filter was full of diesel and it purred like a kitten. I shut it down and then I then moved to the oil and drained the oil to change it and the oil filter.

I though I heard somthing hit the bottom of the drain bucket sad . Once it finished draining I inspected the bucket but could not find anything. So I stuck my finger up into the drain plug and sure enough I found something. Its a good thing I did as I could have done more damage that has already been done had i fillied it up with oil and ran it.

I dropped the oil pan and there were two bushing/bearings one all mashed up and the other almost still circular. The Local John Deere Service guy came out and said that I spun at least two of the balance shaft bushings. I know this is not good. I am not a mechanic and am not sure what to do. I could use some opinions as to what to do.

I am contemplating fixing it but not sure what is involved. I have come to terms that this will be expensive no matter how I go. Either trade in and take a hit or shell out the repair bill.

Anyone ever experience this before or could share experiences or suggestions?

Thanks
Eric

Not uncommon, remove engine for repair. Can't just press the bushings in, at least according to my machine shop. They do something else on installation to make sure they don't turn again. Probably can leavebottom end in, but have to take measures to keep it clean while machining. This all depends on if the bores in the block weren't destroyed from the heat from spinning. Not a pleasant repair.
