Howdy , new to the forum.
I have a 1997 C8.3 ( mechanical 12 valve ) and i'm installing the Banks Bighead wastegate actuator on the HX40W turbo. My problem is I can't find my Cummins C8.3 Service manual to get the calibration specs from. I called Cummins (Cummins West , San Leandro and Sacramento) service tech(s) for some help. One told me to use the calibration spec for a B5.9 ( regulated air pressure 29 psi, and actuactor travel measurements of .013 minimum /.051 maximum) which doesn't sound right to me. The other Cummins tech told me that they don't calibrate a replacement actuator becuase they are set at the factory ( a total bunch of crapp)
I called a performance diesel engine company ( of which I have a lot of respect for). The owner told me that they don't set replacement actuators up to specs anymore, it takes too much time. He stated that he applies enough regulated air pressure to extend the actuator arm fully, then shorten the adjusting link till it fits on to the CLOSED wastegate pivot arms pin.
Three distinctly different approaches. What I want is the C8.3 specs to get a basic set up and then adjust from there.
I've had little or no responce from the multitude of diesel websites or other diesel or RV forums. If I'd know that it was this difficult to get a simple answer i would have bought a second Cummins Service manual.
Can anyone help?
thanks, dave

What boost pressure do you what to run at??................As far as cummins warranty or most anyone who only deals in stock ratings will tell you around 30 psi ...............they have a theory......... anything above 35psi blows head gaskets and does not help performance............Most ppl just bypass wastegate operation in hopes of increasing power.........They think more boost increases power.
