I'd like to ask a question about the diesel motor for our generator. Our generator has a Delphi injection pump/governor. The regulation of the speed is not great. It's 62Hz with no load on the generator, and as low as 59Hz with load. When there's a heavy load sometimes the generator slows down enough that it trips it's under speed alarm. I tried to increase the speed by turning the adjustment on the injection pump, but what happens is if I turn it to slow the engine down I can, I went down to 58Hz, then as I go the other way to speed up it gets to 59Hz and there's a lot more travel to the adjustment but it has no effect.

Any ideas? From all the techs I've talked to the injection pump/governor is not field serviceable. Does it sound like this one needs replacing already? It's only a few years old and sees about 10 hours of use a day.

Thanks!
Greg

your engine is not able to carry the load, low power or overloaded. Engine speed no load on a mechanical govenr 62 hz should not drop below 59 or 60 unless engine can not carry the load

I agree, but... the load is well under the generator's rating. It sure seems like a governor problem.

im not sure on the generator side of things im not too experienced on them apart from basic maintenance and testing the elrand that; but maybe its a problem with the genny end what volts are you getting? these fuel pumps are rubbish, jcb use them on their 444 engine and ive seen it 3 times now on machines that are only 4 years old- the shuttle valve wears and contaminates the pump and doesnt allow the engine timing to match its governed state, you get white plumes of smoke on decelartion but you wont be able to diagnose like that on a genny!!

Thanks for the reply! The pump is still hanging in there. Speed regulation is out of tolerance but it's acceptable. Our volts are good and the machine is definitely not overloaded.
