IH 6.9 V8 Diesel

How reliable is the 6.9 V8 diesel used in Ford's first diesel powered trucks? On average, how many miles do they go before they are really tired and need a rebuild? Are they as tough as the 5.9 Cummins and last the same amount of miles? I think the 5.9 Cummins is a 500,000+ mile engine and in some cases can go for much more. I think the 6.9 IH is probably not as good because of the V8 design and a inline 6 makes for a tougher, better built design. Thanks for any info.

The IH 6.9 V8 is a good engine and should go a good 300,000 easily. As for it being worse or better than the Cummins 5.9, the comparison is skewed. The "V" design of engine is better suited for speed where the inline is a torque engine not a speed demon. When you look at the bottom of the engines a V has fewer main bearings than an inline which allows the inline a greater capacity for torque than a V without damaging the crankshaft. This is why most heavy duty(class 7 & 8) LARGE truck engines are an inline 6. If you are looking for a truck engine for everyday large pulling power the inline is the way to go, however if you are not pulling that much and want a daily driver that has a good capability of pulling the V will do just fine.

Thanks a lot for the info, I'd been waiting for a good, informative reply for some time and you gave me just what I asked. I appreciate it and I did think the 6.9 V8 was a tough, reliable engine. I know more about the 5.9 Cummins then the 6.9 International Harvester and may consider to buy an older Ford diesel if the right truck pops up.

Since it has been five years since you started this topic, I was wondering if you ever found a IH 6.9 V8 Diesel, and if so, what your experiences with it have been. I am asking because I am considering buying a '84 F250 4x4 Diesel from our diesel mechanic at work (solid waste industry) - if I can talk him into selling it to me. This one has had 2 or possibly 3 engines already, and the last 2 have had a turbo installed. This one runs great - very strong on the highway, and has a very smooth, precise 4 speed tranny. It has really been taken care of over the years, with very little hard work/abuse - the previous owner to this mechanic is also a co-worker(driver), and was the 2nd owner, and had it for many years. Unsure how many miles are on this engine though. The 2nd owner/driver said the odometer has turned over once, and is currently reading ~76k miles (meaning a total of ~176k miles on the other parts). Thanks for reading.

Excellent engine. No big power here, and with 21 to 1 comp ratio, I would be real careful putting boost to this. Usually the "smoke screw" is turned up to keep things cooler, this adds some power, cools the combustion process off, but it is an attempt to reduce future problems. It is a good package adding the turbo kit, and gives it some much needed HP, but be advised it will usually result in a slight reduction in engine life than aspirated. I would not be afraid of it. I owned an 86 with the 6.9. It was no speed demon, would pull all day at 45 mph with any type of load behind it, large or small. It just had worlds of torque, no HP. Go get 'er if you can. It'll go 250,000 300,000 before rolling in a set of rod and main bearings. Keep the fuel system tight in it, and get a good block heater, and it will start year 'round in any temp. Oh yeah, check the glow plugs every fall and replace as needed.
