A few days ago when I was starting our Perkins Prima M80T, there was a very loud bang and clattering sound from the starter motor.
When I removed the starter motor I found that the casting that holds the end of the shaft (inside the flywheel housing) was broken.
I now have a new Starter Motor to fit but before testing it I would like to know why the original starter motor broke.
Any ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Regards
Lex

Does that model have an inspection point around the flywheel anywhere? You could visually watch the ring gear turning round and look for maybee a broken ring gear sticking out . If no inspection try turning the motor over from front or from the starter opening looking again for an obstruction that might have smashed the starter. Otherwies maybe there was a fault with the casting or perhaps it was not installed correctly ,perhaps the bolts were loose?
