Hello. I am am new to this site and new to IH diesel engines. Any guidance would greatly be appreciated. In short (or long), we bought a 1983 IH S1900 truck with DT 466-180 HP motor. The truck is definately used, 350K miles, but was supposed to be mechanically good. We were looking for an older truck to haul building and landscaping materials for our schools shop class. The students take on projects in our small rural town. Here they learn skills and earn money. The goal is to help keep the vocational program open, so the money earned goes towards funding the program. Anyway, we were taken advantage of. The transmission went out on the way home(purchased as -is, no help from seller). We located a used one for $750. Now the truck won't start. The honest person that sold us the truck said it might take a little starting fluid when it gets cold. That is now the only way it will start. Once started, it seems to run ok I guess. It doesn't matter how long it runs, or how long it sits before trying to start it. It will need a squirt of starting fluid, then it starts right up. We replaced the fuel filters, but no luck. As I said earlier, any help would be appreciated. We are trying to do the work, ourselves as we have no diesel mechanics, and the money will have to come out of the students fund.

Sounds like low compression. I have seen this many, many times. Does this engine have a Model 100 rotary fuel pump? They can give you lots of problems also. Does the idle begin to fall off after awhile? HTH, Kevin

Thank you for your suggestions. I will check to see what pump it has and get back to you. We replaced the filters again after unhooking one tank and seeing what came out. We have just sat and started, shut off, and started again to get a feel of what is going on. I would say that now we can get it started every other time we attempt it. Getting more puzzled. The idle does seem strange. I would need to sit and study the rpm's, but it sems to me that they fluctuate. They will drop, but then come back up, and after a short time, it does it again. We understand is it old, possibly worn out, and very hard to help just hearing symptoms and not knowing conditions of all componets. Once again, we can not thank you enough for your time. The plate on the pump says AMBAC then Navistar International. As best as I can tell the model number reads 100 CA-100-A-9412-43. Does this help? I was also looking at the engine sticker. It reads that it is a DTB 180. At the bottom of that sticker it says 1979 and lists all the months. Is this motor a 1979, not an 83. I'm thinking about cleaning and using just one tank. Put new fuel line on, as well as a new hose from the filters to the pump. It has some cracks on the outside. I would also try to run some type of injector cleaner. Does this sound reasonable?

After replacing those filters, I try to start the truck each morning (just to see). It usually starts right up. I let it run for a few minutes, then turn it off. If I try to start it right back it up, it tries to fire one time, then just turns over. It has done this the last 6 days. Losing prime? Sucking air?
