Hi guys,
Been fallowing treads on this site for a while and very impressed with it.
Some different opinions but that's exact reason we have places like this.
I have 05 Western Star with DDEC V 14L 515 HP in it. Was originally programmed to 490 HP.
Brad from diesel power and equipment programmed my ECM to 615 HP. EGR delete and VGT delete was done as well.
At that time I was pulling end dump trailer grossing around 130000 and was getting 5 MPG (was low 4's before programming). Lot's of power, gained two gears up the hill I used to climb up every day.
Never replaced turbo. Just adjusted it to work as old one since VGT was deleted from ECM.
Recently switched to pulling vans up to 100000 Lbs from Ontario to Montreal and my mileage is around 5.7.
The only turbo gage is part of on board computer and some how it will only read up to 32 PSI same as before programming. Can't see that VGT was manually adjusted to exactly same specs since my mechanic had never done it before. Could be that computer won't register anything above 32 PSI??? It also displays wrong fuel economy since programming so PSI values may be wrong as well.
I'll be installing manual turbo gage soon.
What I'd like to know is if I decide to replace turbo what is it that you guys recommend?
Also I think(hope) that I should be getting better mileage so could it be turbo that holds me back? Air cooler was replaced last year and there is no leak in the system. Make almost no difference how I drive it. I can baby it or drive it like I stole it MPG would be about the same. Don't know if it matters but diff ratio is 3:90 on 22.5 tires. Single under hood air filter and single stock muffler. Speed is locked to 105 KM/H and it spins 1525 RPMs on that speed.
Looking forward to your replies and sorry about long post. Just trying to provide as much info as possible.
Thank you.

I,d check with a few of the racers here and on the other boards but most will say BW 171702 up to 700 hp and then BW 177287 over 700 hp Regards David

Hi David,
Thank you for your reply. I will try to find Canadian distributor and get price from him. May also be looking at some free flow mufflers and better air filter. My buddy has write off Western Star with dual mufflers and air filters so I may even do full swap later on. My only concern is that BW 171702 appears not to have waste gate. Probably not a big deal. I would just have to install manual boost gage to make sure I don't over spin it. If I can gain an extra 1/2 MPG or more I am definitely keeping my truck. If I can not I may sell it and get older one with 12.7 and start all over again.

Hi Stump,
Thank you for info and sorry about late reply.
My radiator and turbo down pipe quit and was busy replacing them.
Didn't have a chance to do much more past few days.
I did however call BW and was able to locate Canadian dealers.
The guy I spoke to was not sure if 171702 would fit on 14L.
Will call him back with part number of my turbo (DDE E23534361) on Monday and see what he says.
Still don't think simple cross reference will do much since I am looking to replace VGT with non VGT.
We'll see. I'll post more once I've spoken to him.

I hope you have a pyrometer. If you don't have one, get one. Watch it and try to keep it under 1100. also keep your eye on your exhaust manifold center section for cracks. A Brad Wheeler tune may not work with a standard style turbo. Keeping the VNT turbo allows him to still build boost but at the expense of back pressure and heat. couple that with the 30% fuel he adds and your center section only has so long to live.

Just spoke to BW. They say they don't carry replacement turbo for my 14L (not non VGT anyway). Gave me phone number of shop in Montreal. Spoke to them and waiting for call back. I conditionally sold truck but would still like to pass all the info to the new owner.
amishmafia00 I don't have a pyro. Finely installed turbo gauge and it goes up to 35PSI if I really step on it and I try not to do it often. I will keep my eye on exhaust manifold. Thank you for that info. What do you suggest, If I get to keep the truck am I better off replacing that turbo with something else or do so once it goes bad? Also who would you recommend for my next ECM tune? I simply went with Brad because he was the cheapest at the time and really didn't know (still don't) much about all of this.
Thank you.
