Hi.
I'm looking for THE BEST combination of components to power a motorhome
and have NO idea what to really expect. My experience is negligible. I
have a 58xx empty wt. Oshkosh stepvan with 160hp Cummings 5.9TD/Allison
542 4spd/Dana 70 diff/8x19.5 tires & around 180,000 miles on it. I think it gets about 10mpg: speedo's way slow. That is ok but I'd rather get 15+mpg. Also like to keep the chassis below the 'special license' GVW
categories (26,000 GVW?)
People tell me that the I.H. DT466 with hiway gears & manual trans are
very sturdy, long lived, +-economical. Problem is, almost universally,
they say something like "I don't know how many MPG it gets. I just gas
& go."
Any ideas? Thanks.

Youre 5.9 cummins is an excellent engine and is one of the easiest small diesels to modify.I would sugest contacting Diesel Injection of Pittsburgh. They have a website. They are the best cummins shop I have ever found, nationwide. They experiance with these moters, they are easy to talk to,and they are affordable.Even if youre 5.9 is completly worn out,I sugest rebuilding it following their guidelines versus the unneccarey expence of swapping to a different brand. If it not worn out, then you might be suprised at how easily they can make a dramatic difference in it.Also, install a tachometer if you dont allready have one. These engines get theyre best fuel mileage at an 1800 R.P.M. cruise speed. If you are wound up tight at youre normal cruise speed, then a change of gear ratio in the rear end,or a transmission swap might give you very dramatic fuel mileage increase. If you need to keep youre rear end ratio for hill climbing, then look into a Gearvendors auxiallry overdrive for youre current transmission. They have a website too,and they might be the most cost effective for you at this time.good luck.

'I listed a surplus Watermota diesel on DieselEngineTrader. It took a few months to sell, but I was delighted as the engine was quite obscure and I never thought anyone would buy it!'

John MacTaggart Dalintober Boats UK

'Great program, real easy to list engines.'

Mike Howell, Eaglemark 4 Equipment, Ohio, USA

'Just for the record, I did get more traffic from your web site than any other way I tried to sell the motor and will certainly use your site again. Have also told others how many calls and e-mails I recieved - thanks again!'
