Smokes like a fire storm at start-up. Think the problem is old fuel and bad glow plugs. Picked up new Bosch ones. Plan to replace all four (NEED to since they are all 'fast' versus 'slow').

Boy these are tough to remove!
Then again, I've left all the injection lines, hoses and cable in place hoping to symplify the re-installation.

Can I remove the injection lines (not injectors) with little risk? Will I need some new seals or gaskets?

I'd like to pull off the lines, replace the plugs, re-install the lines, replace the fuel filter (fill it up with fuel), and dry-crank until it fires.

Thoughts, impressions, suggestions welcome!

Jim

Jim, is it black, blue, or white smoke. Sounds like worn out injectors. But the topic at hand is glow
plugs.
Yes, you can remove the lines with little risk. No gaskets or seals are required. Reinstall lines and bleed
air from lines at injectors, ( one at a time). You can try to fire this hare without bleeding, but good luck.

Thanks for the reply.
A friend who is taking a class on (marine) diesel came over last night and repalced the glow plugs for me. He removed the lines and had the right box wrench to get the glow plugs out. We bled the lines, and it fired up. White / blue smoke for awhile, but after 10 minutes we revved it up to 2000 for 20-30 seconds and the smoke cleared out. Runs smooth.

Is it true that the glow plugs on these stay on while the engine is running?

The fuel is old, there is a rag for fuel tank cap. I think it needs additive, clean fuel and algecide(sp). I might put just a splash of B5-B10 to see what that does (besides eat the lines).

Thanks!
